My first throwing video in ages. Things are a bit more relaxed this time of year and I’m getting time to restock after the craziness of December. Candle bowls are always a best seller and this Christmas was no different. These bowls are so nice to make. I weigh out 350g balls of clay and after that I get into the rhythm of making….a lovely way to start a very cold January morning.

This year I discovered Cacao and all it’s amazing properties. I’ve taken part in wonderful cacao ceremonies and also just enjoyed it as a mid afternoon pick me up. It’s always better from a beautiful cup so I’ve made these little ones that fit snug in the hand and have a dimple that your thumb sits in. I can’t think of a nicer pairing than with the delicious @nibbed_cacao. I have some gift sets up on my website. These will also be available from @madeinkilkenny pop up shop opening this weekend.

This is how I make spouts on my stacking creamers and jugs. I thin out the rim a little first so that it gives a nice crisp edge. This ensures that there is a nice pour with no drips….there’s nothing worse than a jug that doesn’t pour well and then drips.

I was throwing stacking creamers this week. These little creamers are small enough to fit perfectly in your hand and can be used for so many things from sauces to dressings. They have a really nice pour. I make the spout after they have stiffened up a little so I don’t distort the shape.

Throwing 2kg serving dishes. These serving dishes come in 3 sizes and this is the large one. The clay was quite soft so I had to go gently towards the end or it could easily collapse. The detail of the scalloped edge gives it a nice finish and I sell a lot of these as wedding gifts from the studio shop…I’ve said it before ‘you can never have too many bowls’ especially large ones.

Throwing large jugs. 1.6kg of stoneware clay. My pots are thrown quite thin and very little is trimmed off after, so I can get a lot from the clay. Regardless of the size of pot I’m making I use a maximum of three pulls to get the height. When I’m happy with the shape I thin out a spot on the rim and make the spout. These jugs will dry for a couple of days and then they go back on the wheel to have the base cleaned up and stamped thats when the handles go on.
I love these jugs on a table filled with water or even better fresh flowers.
